Ultra prof, advise needed
Hi Guy's >> Just picked up my Utra 80 for install this summer >> While narrowing my search for a contractor who is experianced with the Ultra's, I would like you input on install issues and quirks.
There were some posts that talked about "cracked fittings" and possible relocation of primary wiring? any other know things to look for.
Is it recommended to put the unit up on a raised base for a grade for the condensate line? or just set on the floor>
Boiler will be for oversized Fintube BB, so hope to be operating in the 150-160+ range, so may not reach condensing
Many of the quality install PICs posted here, show the piping mounted to a backboard, given the size of the unit, I would assume this is the standard? as my current is not
Thanks to the wall, setup by D-C-A will be mandatory but so far 2 of my yocals, say it's not needed, so you know they been X'd
Greatly appreciate any input

ultra
I,ve only installed 1 ultra with a buddy but her's a few things ,i believe the 80 does come with a wall mount opiton which would keep floor space and could be set at any distance from the floor.I also believe that the piping exiting the jacket can be re located to out the bottom with a little handy work i would also space the support assemebly off the wall with 3/8 rod coupling giving you a little distance off the wall to work with you may be able to get your pipes to line right up with your versa bar nice deal.If you find some one who does quality work he'll know exactly what to do and don't forget a good air elimenator and follow the manafactures installation instruction.Just wondering are you going to zone or try for constant circulation .Peace and good luck clammyR.A. Yep, long story
new construction >> 4 times oversized for heat loss , bangbang,>> short cycling you would laugh at>> will be taking legal action against builder and hope to recoupe some cash0 -
thanks clammy
Wall option is there, installer will decide >> although the piping is very close to existing if floor mount
Plan will be ODR and like to get near constant circ, but not sure with emmiters
Would the air purger in the PIC suffice or is there a better one for Mo-Co's0 -
spriovent
That taco scoop needs according to specs 18 inches of straight pipe to work correctly go with the spriovent and also do a good heat lose and size it all for low water temp if it's a total re do how about some panel rads then just do a 1/2 pex runs to the panel rads with some trv on them and one distrubtion manifold or as i have with success use some slant fin 80 size it all for design day lose and at a temp of 150 and just use 1 pump no zone valves install some balancing valves to equal your loop lengths out and your set if it's all done right it should cruise along and not cycle to much just modulate down real low .I really like mod/cond boiler they truely shine on fuel savings on the shoulder months and work excellent with low temp systems and high water volume systems with cast iron also .Hope i've help ed peace and good luck clammyR.A. ultra
The Ulta is a great boiler, you will love it just because it is near silent. You won't hear it when it's running. The one piece of advice I could give is to follow the piping instructions in the manual. Don't take short cuts and think you can alter the piping from what is drawn in the manual. By all means go with a spirovent.
Good Luck Brian

YIKES! 4x oversized...
How does the max output of the Ultra model in question compare?0 -
Mike T
It baffles me too,, How they could go this big 140,000 btu in,, 115K btu net
Heat loss, depending on DD temp puts me anywhere between 30K and worst case about 38K btuhr >> [This coinsides with standard for NEW well built construction of 25-35 btu per sq ft]
I say this because my published DD temp is 0 F or +9 depending on who says] BUT and I know you have talked about this, I don't think either of those are the real world>>>
I did a 5 year comparison on Wunderground and realisticly it is closer to 20deg F [this winter is more like 27 F] >> so being in this day and age where my Nat gas prices have been around 2.00 per CCF, I would err on the side of what is real to get better efficiency and if we ever have a deep freeze, I will put a sweater on>>>> LOL
As for the Ultra range, it mods down to 16Kbtu but up to 74K?? btu0 -
Not sure what these guy's called themselves
If you notice, the circ is on the return as well>> so the scoop error is in line for thier quality
Fin tube baseboard is running at 88ft x550 btuh >> heatloss is in the low=mid 30K btuh, so hopefully my oversize, will net me the lower run temps
My savior so far [thanks to the input here] to aleviate my short cycling was eliminate a zone [was 2] and just run one big zone {only a 1300 sqft 3bed 2b ranch]
This was a big reduction in short cycling from on and off at the exact same time to running 8-10 mins twice and hr>> but still sucking 140,000 btu in for every firing
So I understand your thoughts on 1 pump and no valves, but i guess that will be in the hands of whoever

YIKES and EGADS!!
Is the "worst-case" 38 mbh loss based on Manual-J?
0 -
Thanks Brian
for the encouragement,,, >> I did alot of research and the Weil was right up my alley
Closest to existing piping
Outdoor reset
Energy Star {After boiler, everything in house will be]
Modulates to were I need to be
Easy convert to Propane [if ever need be]
Software to monitor by computer
Extended homeowner warrantee
I may have read their brochure wrong, it looked like it said the ODR was included. [did they mean a spot on the board] Don't have it in the crate, so I assume I have to buy?
0 -
Yes
the 38K was at 0 deg F0 -
ODR is in the bag....
or at least it is suposed to be according to page 9 in the control supplement....http://www.weil-mclain.com/FTP/Ultra 310/UltraControlSupplement.pdf
Are you or do you have an indirect??
Also if your loads are that light you may want to limit the fire of the boiler to say 45K.... that will keep it from over firing....if you do have an indirect you can let it run up to high fire for quicker recovery, although my 155 modulates back and runs at low fire even when my son is taking one of his twenty minute adventure in the shower....
Disable the "boost" feature and play with the curve and you can make it so the the boiler will not overheat the house no matter how high the wife runs the t-stat too......
I have many of the Ultra's installed and running, and the only problems I had that were not of my own making were surges by the Power Co. Good surge protection may be wise if there are problems in your area....A few of these have been running nostop for a few years now, in a very corrosive AG. application....haven't killed them yet and they paid for themselves a a few months....just in fuel savings.
Keep up the ??'s the only dumb one is the one you don't ask....

You're down in the range of a modest demand DHW heater.0 -
Pretty easy to wall mount
even without their expensive hard to find optional bracket. Merely drill the rivits out of the back bracket and bolt it to the wall.
They are fine wall mounted on concrete basement walls. A bit vibration noise when mounted on stud and sheetrock walls. Consider a quieter circ than the one that comes with it
I like to mount them 18" above the floor for easy service. then you don't have to kneel or lie down to work on them. Also leaves room for under mount expansion tank.

Great reply;s ,keep them coming
I knew i wouldn't regret this boiler, that many of you spoke highly of
MY bad, the ODR was in the bag, I saw on the box sensor and was thinking,,water
I can't say I have ever seen this question asked, so let me the guinny pig>>>>
Can you use an existing NEW, 40 gal Ruud DHW heater as a Indirect????? >> by elimiating gas supply and repiping>>> it is already installed and is 40 btur and in the off season my gas bills have been minimal
Ideally? >> No benifit or waste of time?0 -
HR
The 80 comes with the Taco 007 >> My existing DE-05 also uses the 007 and I can hear it come on/off [right under the master bedroom]
What other quieter circ choices? >>> thanks0 -
ultra and domestic hot water
On the one ultra that i have installed we had returned to do some other work and the HO informed us of about how happy he was even though the unit had not been running for heat it had been running for hot water through his 100 gal phase 3 tank and he was completly amazed it his gas bill it was a little over 25 bucks not bad considering there where 5 adults and 4 kids and this bill was for a month which they where all home not bad considering there usually gas bill for hot water during the summer averaged at about 2 to 3 times more.He stated that they never run out and saved alot on gas he was very amazed .When it comes to saving money and having more then enough hot water go with a indirect or at the very least set up up so when that hot water heater goes you can just do a little piping and your set.Indirect in any setting surely beat the snot out of a standard hot water heaster for fuel savings and production .I have had a indirect in my home for over 15 years and would not go back .peace and good luck clammyR.A. Personally
I feel the Grundfos 15-58 is the quietest running circ out there. Speed 2, possibly even speed 1 may be provide enough flow, if piped P/S to drive tha boiler. Lower RPMs generally= quieter operation.
To use your current 40 gallon DHW tank you would need a heat exchanger, and at least one more circ. It may not pencil out to well especially with a tank that has a hole in the center. Be better to get a real indirect some day.

In Code
Is there any type of code violation [in MA] to when the system is re-piped to add capped Tee's for future indirect or additional zones?
I tried to get/pay the plumb co. to do this on after the main water meter, so I could add a whole house filtration some day, but they said it wouldn't be inspectable
0 -
So long as it is
on the outlet of the water meter (I assume you are talking domestic cold water here) I do not see why not. May be a local inspectors thing. I see plugged/capped valves all the time but who knows if anyone saw it to object. It pays to be ready for the future!
One concern they may have is that they do not know what might be connected to it and fear some backflow of some sort, just a guess. But you do have hose bibbs over which they have no control so wonder what they are concerned about.
Key point would be that the connection is on your side of the meter for billing purposes though.0 -
Which side do you mean?
On the domestic water side or on the boiler water side? On the boiler water side there wouldn't be any issues. Sometimes people get sticky with deadends (for good reason) on the domestic side.0 -
they don't ,make life easy
Brad,,, yes after the cold water meter on the supply inside the house >> Before there was any piping I asked,, they said NO
Uni,,, On the boiler supply and return piping0 -
condensate
Hi Brian,
I took a look at the picture of your install and am impressed. Nice Job.. I was looking into condensing boilers, but was concerned about condensate drainage. Any available drains in my basement are on the opposite corner from where the boilers can be.
It looks as though you are able to pump the condensate up (based on your picture). Are there specific modifications to make this happen? Or is it set this way from the factory?
Just curious...0 -
A couple of more questions
I plan an using a water treatment >> when the boiler is repiped >> Is it feasible to drain the loops and measure volume of water, to get the right mix % ?
Does a Masters licence, entitle a servicer to work in all States, or just the one of the install
BTW >>>
I set my local Lennox up with a couple of trailers for AC/heating? units for thier Demo's >> if you ever see them around, you get to see my craft....0
