Hot water problems

Thermostats are cheaper than new tanks, but if something has changed in your house to require more hot water, then upgrading may be the best thing. If nothing has changed and water was good before I would want to find out what went wrong, could be a bad thermostat or just a miswired control or even a loose wire. Call the company back, don't blame them just tell them what you said here, most will response and check your concerns.

Hot water problems
I have hot water heat in my house with an Amtrol WH-6 hot water maker and a Weil-McClain HE II boiler. I recently had the circulation pump and circuit board replaced on my boiler. My house is 14 years old. Since then my heat has worked great but I have encountered problems with my hot water. On days like today when it is sunny all day my boiler does not kick on to heat the house as the sun does a good job of it. Because my boiler does not kick on I come home to no hot water. The way I understand this the thermostat on the hot water maker should recognize this and kick on the boiler to heat the water. Clearly that is not what is happening.
Any suggestions??0 -
Funny, all was good until......................
check the thermostat on the boilermate,(it may have been turned down during repairs.)If that looks O.K. turn it up just alittle this should kick on pump and burner ,If these don't help I would call back service company to check it.0 -
Hot water problems
Thanks for the reply John. Right now the thermostat on the hot water maker is set almost to the max. So clearly when the water is below this setpoint this should trigger the burner to turn on. This obviously is not happening. If it turns out to be a bad thermostat is it better to replace only the thermostat or replace the hot water maker all together? We have thought about upgrading anyway since our current hot water maker is only 26 gallons.0 -
Chris.....
...depending on the age of the Amtrol, you may be furhter ahead to replace the entire tank.
We did an emergency boiler replacement this past winter for a client. She also had the same tank as you. We checked out the tank at the time, and told her it looked fine.
Four weeks later, I stopped by while in the neighborhood, just to see how the new boiler was working. (it is located in the crawlspace, by the way) I open the trap door to enter the crawlspace, and was greeted by very warm, wet feeling air!!! The tank had developed a pin-hole leak. NO idea how long it had been leaking, but we knew it couldn't have been more than 4 weeks.
Moral of the story, we returned the next day to replace the Amtrol!
