I have done something similar when I had to get two oil lines (supply & return) out of a tank that only has one tapping.
Good trick and it's in one of Dan's books.

Different way to pipe a CI rad
I though i'de post a couple of pics of a quickie basement heat job that the HO wanted to use some cast irn rads ,i was lucky enough to recieve these for a carry out fee so they found a new home ,i flushed them out and wanted to keep the piping on one side so i installed a dip tube using 3/4 arc tubing with a small flare edge aand used a sweg to make it a tight fit in the 3/4 steel nipple kinda like a honeywell unique 1 side feed return .I just likesd the fact as to keep both supply and return on one side of the rad ,Each rad is feed with wisbro 1/2 hepex ,HO loved it job went very quick less then one day with boiler piping and i also installed a taco sr503 expan. for the circulators and possible indirect in the furture ,the boiler was installed about 1 year ago the last job i did before being let go other service tech started it but after 8 hours did nothing i avarived and let him go made a materal list and starting at 4;30 finished complete at 7;30 so it 's a little rough because it was a time materal and i did not like the fact the HO was getting the business .As things go the HO was really happy with the work i did after hearing they let me go ,he quit thge oil co and contaced me so i've picked him but as a loyal account and a good freind .Peace and good luck clammyR.A. Is that what they call a dip tobe? One pipe in another?0 -
I've done something similar...
same situation, where the radiator was only accessible from one side. I put a dip tube on one of the taps to cause the water to have to flow diagonally through the radiator to maximize tubular output.

CI Rads
I stayed in a hotel in Moscow and every radiator I saw there was piped like that. On the plane back to NY I had the time to figure out how it worked. Have not tried it yet but maybe some day I will have the opportunity. Would have loved to see the boiler room in this hotel.0
