Can I tear down a Smith boiler?

He looked at the old boiler and said it was a coal burner, but I suspect it was a very early oil burner- that is rated 1300 square feet. The Smith is 920 or so.

He bid $8400 for a new Peerless. If I read it right that Smith is rated for water or steam?

The house is 3000 square foot, and I'm going to be tinkering for the next couple of years getting the systems where I want them. Being able to convert oil/gas or water/steam is something I like. My thought is that we will go with radiant in a couple of years, but I figure that is a job I don't want to think about.

I just did the calculator on the Burnham web site. This is up there. 100 year old house.

I can leave some of the pipe in the wall, but horsing the radiators down narrow stairs doesn't look fun.

How much would I pick up just putting a powered flue damper on the old boiler?

There is Smith 19A-S/W-3 boiler available in Northern New Jersey. I'm an aircraft mechanic. Used for the two months.

Am I looking for grief trying to salvage it to replace my 60 year old coal burner (1400 galons this past winter)!

You certainly can disassemble a 19A. I am concerned about the size of the boiler, as the 19s are typically a light commercial (or McMansion) boiler, and would normally be considerably oversized for a single family home.
To reassemble the boiler, you should get new gaskets for between the sections. On that boiler they are Viton, and are not terribly expensive.

please get a heat loss done on your house the smith 19A can probably heat your whole nieghborhood think you spent a lot this past year for heat if its way oversized there is no savings

how many sections is the smith 19A the current boiler is it steam or hot water? if steam you need to know the connected load IE: the radiators are rated for X amount of steam per section as to the power damper the old system is not made to take a power damper no oil heat systrem uses a power damper
