Kriebel Vapor/Vacum System

We basically repiped it like the diagrams show , with checks in the returns too . The Kriebel vent didn't work so we teed in a few Hoffmans . I believe someone went back and replaced them with faster venting Gortons . This was one of only a handful of steamers that I actually saw go into vacuum .

Kriebel system

Came across an old one today. This system still has the Seperator hooked up and functioning. All the radiators were taken out for sandblasting and the contractor discovered the swing checks in the radiator elbows - but only on the first floor. The radiators also have been retrofitted with danfoss TRV (valves not vents)

The boiler - the original American Radiator Ideal Type A, dated 7/29/1919, is going to be replaced. Where is there more info on these systems? I looked at the Lost Art but there is only a limited description of the system, the Library didn't have it either.

he knows all about those systems..he's rebuilt the elbows and valves..a regular kriebel master he is ;-)

I have been reading through some old posts, and it looks like Steamhead and Ron Jr had a similar discussion. The orifices in the return elbows on this were like mini swing checks - not the copper cap variation.

The Seperator will still be used with the new boiler, it has new bolts and gasket material, so it was serviced recently. I am a little concerned with the swing checks in the elbows though.

This home has recently changed hands and no-one knows who did the reworking on the steam system. ie: Vaporstat,LWCO,feeder,and TRV's all seem about the same vintage

well, the check valves

would be necessary as far as i can tell because the kriebel system allowed the steam to pass thru the radiators and head to the air seperater which heats up and expands a rod and closes once the steam gets there...so the checks would keep the steam from getting into a radiator backwards which might make noise..hopefully steamhead helps out here..kreibels are not found around my neck of the woods..they are farther east around philly..

Todd , I have

some diagrams of the Kriebel System that a fellow Wallie posted here ( I believe it was Jalcoplumb ? ) . I just can't seem to access my external hard drive where I keep my old files . I'll check it tomorrow for you . I do have some pics of the old and new boilers if you want to take a look at them . The system is running great , 4 years strong .

You can pretty much see everything here. I wouldn't use the old differential-expansion main vent since it is a vacuum type- better to use Gorton #2 vents.

Interesting that your system has an Ideal Type A "Heat Machine". This was the top of the line for American Radiator Co in the 1920s, and we don't see many of them. How about some pics?

a Carlin 701CRD with high-low firing? Did it work as well as you'd hoped? Just curious, we'll probably put one of these on a big Webster system soon.....
