Boiler Leak
I was working on a cast iron boiler that is leaking. Upon visual inspection I found a crack on one of the cast Iron sections. It is at one of the sections above the burner tube. I also noticed that some of the sections had a pinkish color.
I have to let the customer know what his options are. The boiler is approx. 7 years old and is still within the warranty period.
Is this a defect from the factory. I want to let the customer know if this is a possible warranty or not. Is thier something else I should be checking?0 -
failed boiler
I don't work with residential boilers but if faced with a failed piece of equipment that was still under warranty, I would call the manufacteres rep.
As I understand it, many things can cause boiler failure.
Good luck,

leaker
A pink or reddish color on the surface of the heat exchanger can mean that it was overheated. Was it equipped with a low water cut-off? Definitely seek out the local rep for the product to check for warranty availability.

If this is a steam boiler
it was probably dry-fired- the low-water cutoff was not properly maintained, and the boiler was fired with no water in it. I doubt if the warranty would cover this, but by all means check with the rep.

Type
It is a water boiler. Has a lower cut-off and water feed. We have sent the boiler back to the manufacturer for an assesment. It is only being used for space heating. So the customer can wait untill the assesment0 -
that doesn't sounds
That doesn't sounds right... Water boiler dry fired with lwco/feeder... Sure this isn't a steamer? What brand? Any pictures?0 -
Water boiler
Turns out the boiler had a severe flow restriction. The boiler was plugged with what appears to be lime or calcium build-up. I was told that a system leak could be the cause. I went back and pressurized the system and I found a pressure drop, I just have to find out were I am losing the pressure. Any Suggestions?0 -
Leak found
turns out a couple of airvents on the rads were the source of the pressure loss. I have corrected this and we will see if everyone is ok.
I have put a meter on the automatic water feed to see if any water is made up during the next heating season.0
