what about boiler insulation???

I have an old American Standard, American Severn No. C33 Series 1BJ2 boiler. I would like to add fiberglass bat insulation to the sides and top of this boiler. I have removed one side panel of the boiler and there is room to add 3 1/2" on the side and top. Can I use fiberglass for this insulation or not?
All help appreciated.

    Be very careful...

    ... one of my colleagues burned his lab down thinking that all fiberglass insulation is the same. It is not.

    Home fiberglass insulation uses starch as a binder and starts burning at around 500°F. Not a problem under normal conditions, but if the boiler dry-fires...

    ... so if you place new fiberglass in there, be sure to buy appliance-rated stuff (i.e. for use up to 1000°F). McMaster Carr sells "High-Temp. Fiberglass Blankets" halfway down page 3306, which I used to good effect with an oven that I had to re-wrap due to mouse infestation.

    For even higher temperatures, the Silica blankets come to mind. We used a lot of them at my old workplace and they're good up to 2000°F.
