check valve question

June 2006 in THE MAIN WALL

I want to install a check valve on top of a 275 gallon tank. Ive noticed an arrow on the check valve. My question is does the arrow face the tank or the pump on the burner??

  the arrow goes the same way as the flow of oil. Why the check valve?
