The thing i found interesting was that Thermopride was being sold in a big box store. I've always felt that they build the best oil fired furnace but I have a philosophical problem buying from manufacturers that sell thru Home depot0 -
Was it bought at the store, or was it just contracted through the store?? Big difference! I recently asked Smith Boiler people why they were selling their Series 8 as a Hydrotherm at Lowe's. The response was quite honest. "Because someone will." That was so much better that another manufacturer claiming they have no control over who buys and sells their boiler!!!!

sounds like the contractor provided the furnace not home depot als sounnds like contractor scewed up the install never heard of a new furnace sooting up a house

I agree Ken...
... the notion that manufacturers have absolutely no control over their distribution channels is bunk. It's really a question of how badly they want to have control, the rest then is simply a question of money, market share, etc. they want to sacrifice to get there. Look at what Lennox was/is doing to fully control it's outlets... they're buying them all. Can't get better distribution control than that!
On the other hand, it is a shame to see equipment as fine as a Thermoprode being installed so badly as to soot up the house. Obviously, we are missing the root cause, which is a bummer, but I doubt it's a manufacturing defect on Thermopride unit. More likely than not, the Thermopride was not set up / installed correctly (draft and combustion in particular).
Also, I found it interesting that HD bothered to look into this transaction. IIRC, they get a 6% cut for referring the job, so anytime they send someone into the field to take a look at a problem job they're going to start losing money pretty quickly.0 -

They probably had to to calm them down . That is the great irony . People feel they can't trust "Bubba" so they go to the big box and guess who shows up at thier house , Bubba. 6% is the tip of the iceburg it's more like 21% on your H.D. card.0 -
Earl Eaton used to run a school for techs going for their oil burner liscense. I'm surprised they would go all the way to Falmouth for an install.0 -
Bad PR
Home Depot sold the appliance and included the cost of an installing subcontractor. They (HD) pay the subs an hourly rate (which I deem way too low)for the work. Invariably, ya get watcha pay for.
You can bet that there is no SS chimney liner or a major vent problem; that a combustion test was not performed that would identify any burner or draft problems; or that HD knows how to pull in an expert to 'make it right'. Just ranting...
