Pump away.
Two issues are at work here. How to get rid of air that's in the system; and, prevent it from recurring again.
The Spirovent will do neither.
The boiler block is the appropriate place to snag air. The water is the hottest (liberating the air from entranement) and slowest (allowing simple and easy scavenging).
If no other options were viable, I'd make the Spirovent first among second choices.

Auto air vents
I was helping out a friend last night and the customer wanted one automatic air vent installed in her boiler room for the whole house as opposing to the manual bleed on each unit.My friend told her that it wouldn't work because she had a combination of baseboards and convectors thru out the house(multilevel). Is this accurate? What he suggested was to install auto air vents on each unit. This is gas fired hot water system.0 -
one word "Spirovent"0 -
"Auto" air vents can also introduce air into the system-depending on where they are placed!0
