Difference between a cast Iron and a Steel Boilers

Steel boilers are typically less expensive and do not last as long. Traditionally I would say they last about 75% as long as CI boilers under similar conditions. Naturally the water side has to be tight without undue make-up water and they both have to be run above the flue gas dewpoint.

They are more forgiving of thermal shock but less forgiving of corrosion.

They are offered to market at a lower price point than CI boilers, what may be (unfortunately and sometimes derisively) referred to as a "contractor's boiler". By that I mean a boiler that will lower the overall contract price enough to get the job.

Personally, Cast Iron would be my choice between the two.

    Cast iron or Steel.

What is the difference or benefits between a cast Iron and a Steel boiler. I see some of the steel have a higher AFUE numbers, and most are called wet system. Are there any advantages of one over the other, having similiar prices.

    Thanks for the info.
I found an explanation on the System 2000 web site, which explains the difference. However, is totally different from yours. The question is? Is this purely a marketing strategy or they have a valid claim?

    steel boiler Vs C.I.

usually it is price ...there are different formations for both steel and C,I, it would be a range that would take quite a stretch of time to convey.

piping strategy, emitter type, control strategy fuel type and quality,... all come into consideration when choosing a boiler.

while i may really like a boiler made of one quality of steel or iron it may not be available...

as far as prices are concerned that alone is not a guarantee of anything.
