It is a dual coil solonoid valve. I did not remove the valve itself but disconnected the wires to the coils and tested with ohmmeter. One coil has dead short, other coil has resistance.I will see if I can get the valve No. before I go to Grangiers this morning.I have the coil in my hand but no numbers or manufacturer. My wife found papers for water heater{Bought in 88}and says no user serviceible parts under cover.Probably for safety reasons. Thanks for reply, will let you know what happens.

Looking for parts
I ama homeowner with A. O. Smith sidewinder F P V 50. The pilot is lit,the fan comes on but no burner. I tested the dual coil gas soloniod valve and one coil is bad. Where do I go for parts, especially on Sunday? I will wait for Monday for coil. Thanks in advance for any info.PS- I found this interseting forum by chance,Iwill save this to favorite.0 -
What is the
make and number of the valve? Also how do you know the coil is bad? Some gas valves have a built in diode which can fool you when testing.0 -
Very likely
It's very likely that you will not be able to buy the solenoid as a seperate piece. Anything to do with a gas train on any type of appliance is usually sold as an assembled ccomponent only for safety reasons. Be prepared to buy the whole gas valve complete.0 -
Valve
Valve is White Rogers,25M17,TYPE 702,Part no. 1803690 -
Cross Reff.
If Graingers is all you have in the area, give them a call. They should be able to cross reff. your existing GV. Never and I mean NEVER replace solenoids on a standard valve. If you get leaks, you will be opening yourself up to a whole lot of trouble. It's almost like diagnosing a resistor on a circuit board.... Took way to much time and although you could probably fix it, how much warranty are you willing to provide to the customer with the minimum repair...? Replace the Valve.

Dave,
You said a mouthfull! "My wife found papers for water heater{Bought in 88}and says no user serviceible parts under cover.Probably for safety reasons. Thanks for reply, will let you know what happens."
Do yourself and your family a favor and get profesional help. If you don't know what your doing you could easily lose your house or more importantly your life and the lives of your loved ones! Gas controls are NOT something that a homeowner should be messing with. The saftey warnings are there for good reason.
Just trying to look out for your saftey!

if this guy
If this guy is a homeower and able to get parts from Grainger's.... Grainger's selling to anyone off the street now? Another home depot service,, everyone get treated the same?0 -
changing gas valve
Lets get real changing a gas valve is very easy. Graingers sells to any business owner, maybe he owns a pet store.0 -
Could not find parts in town, hooked on White-Rodgers and Emerson website and called them up.No help. Finally got hold of AOSmith, they had parts in stock.Sent UPS should be here in 5 days. You do not have to take apart gas control valve to replace coils as they are external.I have done business with Graingers for 30 years through my contractor as I am a retired pipefitter, although right now with no hot water. Thanks again for all the help. Will let you know when water is hot.0
