Another Vacuum system...

Looks like the British wave-energy scientists are at it again, this time with a desalination system that uses a wave-actuated vacuum pump to create steam at low pressure to desalinate water. The New Scientist has an article on it.
Perhaps this is a more economical way to create drinking water at a small scale than the traditonal RO process? The researchers certainly seem to think so.

Nothing new here
Vacuum distallation of sea water for potable water is ancient. The Navies of the world have been doing it since - about 1920 (if not earlier).
There were also some rather large desalation plant built for towns and cities in the 1940's to 1970's.
Reverse Osmosis was the new kid on the block. I understand that while it works - long term maintenance has been an issue. Perhaps we will see more vacuum distallation plants being built again.

ps: I note that you don't know what soft water is until you have to shower with distilled water.0 -
Lost
What I find struggling in scary movies about people lost at sea is how they can die of thirst while surrounded with water. I eat my soup salted, what could be the stretch to take a few sips of the Atlantic stuff, I always think...
And yet, I only need one trip to the beach to be reminded how inadequate sea water is. One sip and I'm headed back for dry land, or more exactly, the nearest drinking hole.
Totally soft water tastes awful, makes the worse coffee and tea, and fails to rinse out the shampoo. Beyond laundry duty, I find it disappointing.

Kills you too
Water out of a desal. plant will kill you. Body takes needed minerals out of bones. They now add back enough minerals to make the water non toxic. Some yuppie parents gave kids distilled water thinking it was healthy, no.0
