Example using KNOWN data , assuming 36 is facing North and 9 ft height with 5 below grade , assuming location hmmm...Washington , DC ..Y is unknown coeficient

Walls N 36 x 5 X Y + 36 X 4 X Y

Walls S 36 x 9 X Y ( edit door )

Walls E 20 X 5 X Y + 20 X 4 X Y

Walls W 20 X 5 X Y + 20 X 4 X Y

Floor ( slab 5 ft below grade ..I use slab on grade mostly ) thickness unknown

36 X 20 X Y

ceiling under conditioned space...no loss = 0
assuming no appliences = 0
no excessive people count assumed =0 ( I don't count for heating under 4 ..may be wrong ).
assuming no fireplace = 0
assuming 1 door ( 3'0 ) wood facing South 21 X Y ( too tired to look it up )

I would enter this data in my Wrightsoft program or a Manual J form. I may be leaving something out due to the concrete and steel from today , and the Maker's Mark from tonight. But to answer your question , this is how I would go about it. I really do try to be a helpful member of this " online community "...my problem is that I want to say alot that can't be said , lol. -Mike

SlantFin offers a free heat loss program

I use WrightSoft so I can't say how good it is, but I assume it should be sufficient for what you need.

I am doing a job for a customer and I am used to doing heat losses on rooms above grade. I wasn't sure how to figure out a room with 3 out of the 4 walls were below grade, and the third is an internal wall. That's all.

I thought that's what it was...when I split the walls in my example ( some above and below grade ) ...either way , good luck on your project. - Mike ( edited previous post to show door on south wall...it has to be exposed to have a door...long day )...2nd edit..the side walls are sloping down to meet the lower grade on the south wall in my example...side walls in my first post are still wrong....I'd consider them half exposed and half at 5 ft below on a calc . I'm out , peace

I have found is download-able from www.hydronicpros.com. Heat Load Pro has a module just for basement calcs. it allows you to build the actual wall.
