How do I check for proper line pitch when the supply runs are wrapped in very old asbestos? It seems as though the asbestos jakdets will throw off the accuracy of checking for proper pitch. I have a very old buidlding and settling and construction work over the years has definetly altered the pitch on some runs causing water hammer in some places. Thanks, Br. Crispin, CFR

    You are seeking a long view

    of pitch anyway and as you said, the asbestos would seem to be throwing off the spirit level. I am going to punt and suggest that you invest in an inexpensive laser level and measure from that level line to a constant portion of the pipe such as the centerline or invert (bottom). I cannot think of a better way without abating the asbestos first. But at least you can see a "trend" in pipe sagging rather than a series of short measurements.

    For laser levels, Black and Decker has a nice self-leveling one for about $40; hangs on a keyhole slot on a wall. Good for other things -like driving the cat crazy.
