thermocouple in fireplace

I was verifying the flue was open the other day. And when I looked up there for the first time I saw the mechanism for the damper AND what appears to be a thermocouple.? This is a fireplace. On each side of brickwork are 2 vents. One lower and one higher. I looked in there and found nothing like a fan. Does anyone have any ideas as to what a thermocouple would be doing in a fireplace? We bought the place 3 years ago & its around 55 years old. Oh ya - no power visable in basement going to the fireplace. Has anyone ever seen a thermocouple in a fireplace firebox?

    Heater Lator

    Could be sensor to turn on a fan for a heater lator..They were big back in the 70's during the oil embargo. Fue oil hit a whopping $1 a gallon. May come in handy again ?
