Best Way for Cutting Steam Pipes

This weekend, I need to cut the pipes on my boiler to prepare for the asbestos removal contractor who needs to remove the sheet metal casing on my 70 year old steamer.

I will be cutting 2-1/2 inch pipes with a sawzall. I have the correct blades but I need to know what speed I should use? Do I use oil as I do when drilling or tapping? Should I use much pressure on the saw, or just a little? I want to avoid breaking blades and learning the hard way!

    Thanks!

    Sawzalls good

Youll catch on. Band saw is another option. Good luck.

if you do this with a sawzall you will disturb the asbestos from the vibration --exposing anyone in the house after to asbestos fibers check out your local rental center and rent a pipe cutter preferably a 4 wheel or better yet --if you know how to use 1 rent a cutting torch--just don't burn the house down no matter which way you go make sure you support the piping before hand -

    BEFORE....

Cutting any pipe that is attached to anything containing "fire retardant material", take a spray bottle(or hose)and SOAK all the material that may be shaken by the movement of the pipe and/or cutter. The wetter, the better. Chris

Thanks for all the tips. There is no asbestos and I have installed good pipe hangers into the rafters to take the load of the pipes. This weekend we go to work.
