Below 58#, the temperature of refrigerant is below 32°F. Because it is below the freezing point of water, it starts to freeze the moisture in the air. (remember that the coil in an A/C system is a dehumidifier), that condensate begins to freeze, building on itself until the entire coil is bloched with ice.

I was wondering why does an AC unit freeze when it is low on freon? shouldnt it just be warm??

Look at the P/T charts

water freezes at 32 degrees, right? The temps below freezing when the suction pressure is below 58 pounds on a R22 system.

But would'nt the warm air warm it down like when its a little low the return line is warm?
