I read a post once about someone who used a grinder to cut grooves in an existing concrete slab and thought that does not sound like fun. Now I am in the same position as I am remodeling the lower level of my house and cannot afford to lose headroom. Any suggestions by veterans of this task?

Not a Veteran of the Task

But can you possibly spare about 1 5/8" of headroom for vapor barrier, ½" sleepers and Warmboard? Nightmarish work to groove, lay and embed and the slab probably isn't insulated.

With the sleepers and warmboard in a basement you can avoid moisture problems, reduce downward loss and have extremely low supply temps.

Initial cost should be more than offset by labor/ frustration with energy savings continuing for life.
