    We've been using,

Pumps with internal checks for so long now I don't even think much about it.(they are spring checks). Either will work. Sometimes spring check will rattle but so don't flow checks that get air trapped in them.

I don't know the answer but have used both with great sucess. My personal favorites are internal. Chris

    The only analogy I

can relate it to is with backflow preventors such as an RPG the spring check , or soft seated check valve is located on the inlet side of the RPG and allows a slower close rate than a swing check so to cause less pressure surge,"water hammer". Which in the case of an RPG , would cause it to spit water.

    Maybe spring but not

swing checks. Swing checks generally just have a brass flapper. A for sure noise maker :)

Look for a spring check with a EPDM or teflon soft seat. Ideally a cone shaped valve for friendlier flow. The flat disc type seem to be noise makers also.

I agree properly installed, and purged internal check pumps should be very quiet.

A swing or spring check does not rely on the head pressure of a pump to open where a flo-check does.

In the attached picture, you will see that the placement of the spring check is used to stop the return of the first pump from going through the 4-way mixing valve instead of the boiler. If this was a flo-check there would be no pump pressure to open it and allow for flow from the 4-way valve back to the boiler.

In the case of where you would use a spring check over a swing check, a spring check can be used in any position, while a swing check needs to be in the horizontal position.

    hope this helps.
