    CO

Anything that burns can produce CO and a detector is always a healthy idea... Some say you don't need one with oil because a oil burner would produce smoke and odor before it emits CO which is a warning of a bad fire. Gas would produce CO before it smokes and produces a odor...More of a chance to be caught by surprise ......

Always buy more then one so you have a back up..

If it has a flame, it can produce and leak Carbon Monoxide!!!!!

So yes you need a CO alarm when burning fuel oil. If you are going to buy only one, make sure it is next to the bedrooms. If there is more than one sleeping area in your house, get one for each bedroom area. If this is a multi story house, get one for each floor. If you decide to put one near the heating unit, keep it at least 5 feet away from the appliance, and make sure it stays close to room temp. If it gets to hot, it could false alarm.

By the way, CO alarms are good for detecting malfunctioning fireplaces, stoves, ovens, ranges, dryers, water heaters, cars left running in garages. In other words, EVERY houseshould have multiple CO alarms, even all electric houses.

Yes, you should. And please keep in mind CO can be present in oil even when there is NO Smoke!

    CO and oil

I recently went on a plugged boiler call. The unit had sooted and smoked but the smoke detectors didn't sound off the CO detectors did. This was after midnight and woke up the occupants.
