Main vent

I just replaced one of my two main vents on my one pipe steam system and it works great. I boiled the mainvent that I took out in vinegar to see if would work in the second vent in the system that isn't working and it doesn't work either. Is there anything else I could try or should I just buy another vent?I think I already know the answer!$!
Thanks to Dan for enlightening me on steam heat... I enjoyed your book "We Got Steam Heat"!

They wear out after a while

just change it. Make sure you get the right size! If you measure the length and diameter of your steam mains, we can help you.

    Main Vents

I have a one pipe steam system and just recently replaced all the air vents on the radiators with "VentRite" vents. I have two Main Vents in the basement and cannot get information on what size or style of vent should be used to replace them. I am pretty sure they are not working although we get good heat now that the radiator vents have been replaced.

The plumbing supply place gave me some number 33 straight up vents and they will fit the existing threads but I am afraid to use them since I don't know if they are the right main vents to use. They don't look like the old ones (which say " No.- 4 - IVS"). I don't have a two pipe system so it can't be vapor. Is it possible that someone put vapor vents on years ago and they are wrong?

The boiler was replaced in '93 and it looks like everything was done right (according to your book).

I have a main vent in two places at the opposite corners of the house which haven't been replaced since ???? Help!!!
