I've seen some tight fits
Options
This was in a Levitt style ( who else ) home in Roslyn , Long Island . The original boiler was a Timkin and the cover still has the logo . I don't know who thought this boiler would be a good fit , but somehow they finagled it in there . I was stunned when I saw it - 3 circs on 2 zones with a sidearm coil . I'm not sure what brand boiler that is , it looks like a downfired Blueray ? And to top it all off , there was a good 2 inches of water in the kitchen , and we brought the wrong boiler . Something like this seems to happen to me almost every Friday .

We had the wrong boiler
to install . I should say the salesman sold the wrong one - a Peerless WBV3 would fit in there , but there was only 2 inches of room from the top of the boiler to the top of the cover , and the homeowner wanted that cover . Who wouldn't , with the boiler right in the kitchen ?
We got the Weil Mclain Gold 3L , the same one we use off the floor . The 1 1/2 inch tapping in the front is what saved us - and it makes air elimination through the boiler a no brainer . This one wasn't the prettiest job we did , but we made sure everything is easily accesible - only 1 wire to the aquastat and LWCO for easy removal , and plenty of room to get at the circs and oil filter . I wanted to hang the expansion tank down but there simply was no room for it .0 -
looks good
but wont that taco cook in that angle? nice work Ron, we need to sit and have a beer or 12 someday,Dave0 -
Unbelievable!!
Ron,
I don't know how you manage to fit all that in such a tight space - much less finish it in one day! You are a wizard with pipe. -DF

Oh MY !
Whatever possesed the person to install this retrofit MUST be EXORCISED!!!
If it was a BlueRay, firing horizontal was a nightmare to be sure, but trying to fit and fire it vertically must have been an abomination! The only way to clean em' was from the tubes on the front, and I can't even see how anyone could access them in that position.
Ron, I've got to agree with Mr. Milne. You get to see and repair/replace more SCREWY equipment, in the FOULEST places than anyone should be subject to in a lifetime. You ARE an Arteeest!
Looking forward to seeing you at Wetstock. Chris0 -
I have to break out
a Taco instruction sheet - funny how you install so many but throw away the white paper that comes with them , every time . I think that the no-no position is with the motor sticking up , and it's a moot point if you run the system at 20 psi or better , which this one was at . I wanted to have the circ motor horizontal , but it stuck too far out . I'm in for a few drinks , are you going to Wetstock ? Thanks Dave .0 -
I had some help
from my partner Brian . He piped up the return on the left side , the pressure reducer and the oil filter with Tigerloop . He also chopped out the chimney to get the smoke ell into - this whole job is usually a pain in the **** , but with the boiler cover it brings it to a whole new level of butt pain . And my knees feel like Jalapeno jelly if there is such a thing . I'm glad the week is over . Thanks alot Dave .0 -
It was probably in the days
of the big push of Blueray products . You can't believe how many homes we see the tabletop Blueray in where it does not fit quite well .
This was the 1st downfired Blueray I've seen , and hopefully the last , at least in this type of home .
Being close to Boston and homes squeezed together close like around here , you have to get your hands dirty on this type of stuff all the time too . Long Island can't be the exception to the rule ? Hey , when we see installs like this , with not a thing easily accesible , it makes the work we do shine just a bit more .
Thank you very much Chris for your comments . I can't wait for Wetstock . How are you and Scotty getting down there ? Taking the train ?0 -
Is that a Weishoupt Burner?0 -
The old burner
was a Riello , date code of 94 . The new one was Riello also . We've been seeing more and more Riello burners in old boilers we replace . A few years ago a used Riello was like gold - you never saw one in a changeout .0 -
Well, Now I HAVE seen everything..
Is this a Long Island thing? At first I thought It's where the beer went. I've never seen THAT before, and then you were able to acually put the cover back on it. Your a better man than me Charlie Brown. I don't even know ya & I'll buy that round. Good work! Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -

Taco Pump instructions
http://www.taco-hvac.com/uploads/Product_PDF/223.pdf
It does say that the pump motor must be horizontal or can be pointed UP if over 20 psi. Also says electrical box must NOT be mounted down (6 o'clock position). Hate to be the bearer of bad news but technically both pumps are not pobitioned properly. But considering the room you had to work it's amazing you got anything in there. You are the small space master. Nice job. Would be glad to service that unit down the road.0 -
Ron
I am running out of adjectives.
Looking at the original install my remark was " Yes he's right, there is a boiler under there ".
Ron, I belive that most installers would not be able to do the installs that you do, only because they would not be able to figure how to fit everything in there. You have a great abilty to make it all fit AND make it look like it came from the manufacture that way.
Chris and I are flying down on the corperate jet, being picked up by a limo and then we will reside in the penthouse at the hotel
. O.K. we'er flying couch and eating peanuts , but we'll be there around 5:30. Just in time to meet you boys coming back from the tour.
They really ought to use your photos for a training seminair.

jealous
I really would like a boiler in my kitchen0 -
Thanks for the PDF
You are right , it does say you can't have the junction box at 6 o'clock . Is there a specific reason for that , or is it just to protect the wiring in case the pump leaks ?
It also does not specifically say you can't mount the motor facing down , but with the concern for the 6 o'clock position , I'm gonna try to keep the circs mounted the way they want them mounted . Thank you Glenn .0 -
Robert
I'm coming to the conclusion that this might be a L.I. phenomenon , but when Gary UK used to post the pics of boilers he worked on in England , it looks like very similar situations . I have a pic of a Timkin sqeezed in tighter quarters , I'll see if I can dig it up . Thank you Robert . Are you making the trip down to Baltimore ?0 -
Scott
Believe me , we did not have it too bad . While we were ripping out the old one I kept thinking how the guys felt to install that Blueray with that sidearm coil . Because if it was me , I woulda found a nice , safe place to cry a little , maybe contemplate my existence on this earth . And knowing how things go around here , it was a 1 day job for them too . The homeowner was a very nice elderly lady . She was pretty upset about having the wrong boiler . We reassured her that all would be taken care of with nothing to worry about . She was more happy that we sopped up all the water in the kitchen than having the boiler running . Well , she was happy about that too .
Thank you very much Scott . Seeing what you , Chris and the crew can do , your comments make my day .0 -
I suppose....
...that if you do enough of those "shoe-horn" installs that you develop a knack for them after awhile. It still amazes me, though, Ron, every time I see a picture of one of your masterpieces. You are THE MAN!!!
Been a while since I got my hands on an old Timken furnace - what a sweet machine they used to be!!

This one went pretty smooth
The jacket comes apart pretty easily for 50+ years old . Once it was out , getting the old boiler out of there was a snap . The hard part was building the header , and I like to hang the circs , flowvalves and expansion tank in black . I'm gonna rethink that option for the next one .
We've been pushing out alot of boilers , but it's the same old stuff and I don't want to repeat what I've posted before . But we do get the unique jobs from time to time , and this one was a doozy . Thank you very much Clammy . By the way , what is your real name ?0 -
Very lucky man
A cruise sounds great . I was looking into one of the transatlantic getaways , or the New York to Montreal cruise - ahh , someday . Watch out for that sickness you hear about from time to time on some cruiselines .0
