Oil tank gage installation

If I install the gage in one of the tappings that is close to the center of a 275 gallon tank, which way is best to have the float arm to face?

If I face it toward the other center tapping, where the fill is installed directly above it, I thought it might be "washed" of the sludge that accumulates on the float during fillups.

I have room to face it the other way, towards the end of the tank - in case having it directly below the fill could damage it during fillups.

Any experience on what's best for this?

    At the flow rates that todays delivery trucks are capable of, I think that it would be beneficial to keep the float away from the fill pipe. Have replaced gauge vents on two horizontal tanks recently both were installed with the float under the fill. Both less then three years old,two different manufacturers. Reason for replacement ,guages not reading correctly. One lost the float, the other was bent.

    That's what I was afraid of...

    While I was cleaning the inside of this particular tank, I came across an old gage arm and float laying on the bottom, probably damaged from the filling process. That should have been my answer, right there. Just wondering, though. Thanks!

    face it away from the fill,no evidence this is better just seems to me to be the way to go
