it's recycling its own flue gas products for combustion, and we all know how well CO2 burns...

Sounds like you need a pro to take a fresh look at it, before someone gets monoxided, or monoxidized. New word, 2 points each!

    Hiigh wind blows out pilot light

    I have two direct vent heaters Empire DV215 heaters. One is on the South side of my home one is on the north side. On a windy day the pilot light on the north side will blow out but only if the heater is on. If the heater is off the pilot stays on. Any one know what the cause of this may be or how I can fix it? The vent is 9" Dia, goes 4" out from outside wall and has four flanges.

    pilot outage

    I would have someone check that burner access cover is on and sealed, 2nd off, vent or intake pipe may not be connected and sealed properly. These units depend on balanced pressures between intak and flue outlet. If the seal is broken there will be a imbalance or flue gasses getting into combustion air intake pipe.
