What is the formula for calculating the amount that water expands as it is heated? IU have looked in a few reference books but so far not been able to find it.

Here's a spreadsheet found on the web

Table below is every 2° from 32° to 212°. Note that water is most dense (lowest specific volume) at 39.2° expanding both above AND below this temperature.
Specific volume of water (volume of 1 lb of water) is the reciprocal of specific density (in pounds per cubic foot).
Divide 1 by the pounds per cubic foot from table below, i.e. @ 32° 1/62.42 = 0.01602 cubic feet.0
