Attaching pex tubing

I was told by a friend's dad not to attach pex tubing to wire mesh when putting under a cement pour. He said that expanding and contracting would cause the tubing to rub against the metal and cause leaks over time. He said to put sand down and on top of the tubing, then pour. Is this so? Mike

Yes, it does expand......

but with the tubing encased in the concrete the expansion is not a linear expansion..... the dia of the tubing will collapse very slightly.....can't imagine that causing any problems as far as leaks go.

Do your best

to lift or block up the mesh so it, and the pex, is encased COMPLETLY in the slab. Sometimes lying on the bottom will cause voids and allow some movement and POTENTIAL wear spots.

All the examples I have seen of this "rubbing" (Wolf Winkler) have been where the tube was not held tightly by the concrete.

They do make plastic clips to attach and standoff from the mesh. Ends up costing more than the tube

Or you could

skip the remesh, staple the pex to the foam, and use fiber mesh blended into the concrete mix.

I find the fiber mesh does more for crack control than wire mesh lying at the bottom of the pour, which is where it generally ends up, unless you personally lift all the mesh. Burn the fuzz off with a weed burner, after the slab is finished.

PAP works real nicely with foam staples, especially for cold weather pexing.

about sand come from? In sleepers over tube in slabs???? Some bad advice out there....kpc
