reduced between each pair of tees? I bet it is. This would redirect some water thru each baseboard unit.

One Pipe System Without Diverter Tees

In a 1950s house I saw a one pipe, cast iron baseboard system that did not appear to have diverter tees. The main loop is 1 1/4" and the supply for each baseboard looks to be about 1" with the return at about 1/2". The only place where there seems to be a diverter is on the return of the very last baseboard where there is a 1 1/4" brass Taco Venturi. Immediately following this is the pump and boiler. Owner tells the system works great.

The system seems to work. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, how temperamental will it be if I start messing around with flow rates and the like?

Main is a constant 1 1/4" on both sides of the tees. Supply to each baseboard is 3/4" while the return is 1/2". There are no special tees or reducers on the supply or return lines.

  • Could it have those inserts that they sell to fit into regular tees that convert tees to Monoflow tees?

Possibly. However, I'm still not clear on why the return pipe on all the baseboards is 1/2" pipe while the supply pipes are all 3/4"?

How common was it to use venturi inserts back in 1952?
