Converting to vacuum low.....

I have a one pipe steam system. I've been reading about the benefits of converting over to a vacuum system. Any thoughts?

Other then replaceing the vents on each radiator, what else must be done? How can I tell if this has already been done?

    What type

    of vacuum system did you read about?

    If you mean the type where the air vents let air out but not in, forget it. They don't make this type of vent anymore. This only worked well on coal-fired systems.

    An air-line system like the Paul or Eddy is still possible, but you have to change all the air vents and run an air line to each radiator, and install a vacuum pump. It'll work but it's expensive to install and maintain.

    If this is a residential system, your best bet is to make sure all your vents are properly sized, including especially the main vents, and the pipes are insulated. If the boiler is old, a new one is a better investment than a vacuum pump system.
