is because Code requires the gauge to read twice as much pressure as the safety valve (and the max pressure allowable for that boiler) is rated for. But there's nothing to prevent us from adding a gauge that can accurately indicate lower pressures. Just get a 1/4" black steel tee, a 1/4" black 90-degree elbow and a couple of 1/4" black nipples and put everything together.

If it were up to me, I'd use safety valves with lower blow-off settings too.

PSI gauge

We have a Burnham steam boiler in our house. We moved in a few months ago, so don't have much history on the boiler. Anyway, the PSI gauge hasn't budged since we've had the steam on. Shouldn't it register some sort of pressure change when it's steaming?

Pressure

If you look at the gauge you will notice that it will register up to 30psi.

If you look at the relief valve you will notice that it will blow off at 15psi.

Most residential systems will operate with OUNCES of pressure and the gauges that are shipped with residential steam boilers are incapable of reading such low pressures.

As long as you are warm do not concern yourself with the pressure gauge.

I,for one, believe in gauges that read accurately. They can say a lot about the way your system is operating. Yes, it should register, but the gauges that come with todays boilers are notoriously lousy. Have your heating pro check to make sure it's not restricted or replace it with a good quality gauge. How else will you know if your pressure control device is working properly?
Have you ever seen a safety valve go off with 15#s of steam behind it??????

Great idea. I can't find a source for a gauge that reads 0-5 PSI.

Any ideas?
