Am I crazy to size a main floor (no bedrooms--all common space) cooling system for a BBQ on a hot summer afternoon?

Quite a few occupants--west windows uncovered--moderate gain from the kitchen (BBQ outdoors)--big TV & stereo in use--fair amount of fluorescent & incandescent lighting.

Literally makes a "ton" of difference...

Two tons if you consider it's the difference between sizing the high pressure ductwork for a 5-ton evap. vs 3-ton.

    A two stage condensing unit an option? Otherwise, I would size it for normal load and make sure the homeowners understand that during periods of high load the system will fall behind.

    If you size it for worst case (which happens how often?) the system will short cycle and lead to one of those scenarios where the t-stat is satisfied but the house still feels clammy and humid due to short run times.
