Mixing temperatures in a pipe

where two water temperatures mix in a pipe would you consider the water mixed? How far away, in other words, would you put a temperature sensor and be as close as possible to the blend point?

That would depend upon the flow. flow below turbulant would be one thing and above turbulent would be another.

That's a good question

Big's got it right I think, the flow would be a factor. You might want to put the sensor down stream of a devise like a valve, flowsetter, or a couple fittings that would create a bit of a restriction and cause good fluid mixing.

I know for sure too close and you will read conductive temperatures. I suppose a well mounted sensor would be the most accurate.

I have also heard of mounting the sensor on the side instead of top to prevent reading stratifaction temperatures.

To make a long story, long I would guess 24" minimun for a good mix, and accurate reading

If you had...

a turbulator fitting installed, you could put the sensing device immediately after the two streams met... Then regardless of the fluid velocity, you'd be sensing a good mixed up example of the fluid stream.

I found that one

on the internet. It's actually meant for mixing the air up in a motorcycle inlet manifold...

Just thought I'd get the old mind juices a flowing. I have seen turbulator insert fittings, just can't remember where. I think they were from the old solar days.

I know that a couple of tube in tube heat exchanger manufacturers (Doucet and Noranda) used to use the internally "augmented" heat exchangers.

Looks like a good project for HR to come up with a whirly gig fittin' from Pipe Dream Acres ;-)

A double duty gizmo

Since it will be in the pipe for a free ride, we should make it work for a living. Maybe a micro turbine that would light a bulb, or play a tune while it stired a fluid stream.

How about that Italian flow setter at ISH. It somehow spun some contraption that allowed GPM readings via a clamp on amprobe meter.

A barbed brass ring seems to simple, to me anyways
