OK. Ive been trying to research lately but am still confused.
We bought our house 1.5 years ago (built 1925/Weil Mclain steam boiler 19 years old). Fall of last year we had the yearly, and our technician indicated it was a nice boiler in nice shape, and for the winter it did function like a champ. Bills were high-ish, but we had no history, and it was a bigger house (with little/no real insulation).
THis year we had the same company come out for the yearly while I was at work and he told my wife that the boiler had a crack in it and the steam drum would need to be replaced or a new boiler would need to be set. He told me over the phone that he performed an 'overfill' test and it indicated that the cast iron vessel had a crack. This is turning out to be big bucks either way and I was wondering if anyone had advice on getting a second opinion-- what i should ask, etc.
THanks-Andy

Ask to see the crack in the iron
If it's cracked, he gave you good advice.
