I saw my first mattres radiator today...What a thing of beauty to see one up close. Although it was for a hot water system. Chris

That's the
first radiator, Phil. There's a photo of it in The Lost Art of Steam Heating.
Or you can stop by our place in Bethpage and see the real deal. We have one in our little museum.Retired and loving it.0 -
First as in first ever made or first as in the first radiator from the heat source?
Why "mattress"? Does it look like a mattress or does it go in/under a mattress?

It's from
1853. It was patented by Stephen Gold and the first commercially successful radiator in the world. It was made from two plates of iron. The unit is about five feet wide by 3-1/2 feet high. It's only a quarter of an inch thick. It has several hundred rivets across its surface, which makes it look like a mattress. It hung on the wall and was very similar to modern European panel radiators.Retired and loving it.0 -
It
sure does. This was for a h.w. system. Did they make the mattress rads for h.w. systems or do you think it was converted from steam? Chris0 -
Must have been
converted.Retired and loving it.0 -
Ok...
How the heck did it operate, then, if it was only 1/4" thick?0
