Excellent explanation and metaphor on the "tug of war." This should be REQUIRED viewing for anyone selling, servicing and installing boilers, furnaces, water heaters of any type. Whether there's money in the budget or not, every boiler we install gets a smoke/carbon Monoxide interlock in that boiler room. Mad Dog

Hello and good afternoon Ray,
this is a wonderful explanation of carbon monoxide poisoning and how it occurs due to poor draft, leakage of flue gasses, or back drafting creating negative pressure that can cause flue gasses to exit the flue and enter the living space which can create this danger that can be fatal.
With coal heating we have the same issue if a flue pipe becomes clogged with fly ash or the Tee used at the flue breech needs to be cleaned of fly ash by removing the stove pipe cap and pulling the accumulated ash out of the tee.
The local utility here being NYSEG has paid for public service advertisements in the local rag during the heating season with picture of a child wrapped in a blanket with a thermometer in her mouth the caption:
"IS IT THE FLU OR YOUR FLUE?"
