Hello,

I just bought a 1500 sq ft. house in Northern Westchester. It has a one year old New Yorker

CL3-103WET hot water boiler (.75GPH) with 2 fin-tube baseboard zones and a tankless coil for DHW. I'd like to get your advice on the Hydrostat settings. The display readout for the High Limit is 180, Low Limit is 160, and the Economy setting is 1. The burner will fire for DHW when the Hydrostat temp reading drops to about 145. I'm guessing the Economy setting is forcing the lower "cut in" temp. The burner shuts off at the 180 high limit. A Watts tempering valve is set to its lowest value of 120 which is fine for our needs.

The 180 high limit seems way too high for the non-heating season. With the price of oil what it is, I'd like to economize. What settings do you recommend for both on season and off season use. I'm not opposed to changing the settings at the beginning and end of the heating season.

This Hydrostat has the "Electro-well" which provides low water cutoff functionality too. The 30+ year old garage oil tank got the old "heave-ho"…. It had a wet spot underneath at the low end so I think we caught it in time…

I plan on installing their outdoor reset sensor before winter. The boiler is on the north side so the wiring will be easy.

    Trial and error.

    Everyone's hot water needs vary a lot depending on how many people in the house etc so there is no one size fits all

    Start by turning the HL down 10 and the LL down 10 and see what happens and adjust from that. That may be as low as you can go.

    If you HW usage is high you may want to consider an indirect HW tank.

    But I know many families with 2-3 people can get by with a tankless coil fine.

    Tankless coils are rated at 200 deg boiler water to get its rated capacity. Capacity drops with cooler boiler water.

    When you have a tankless coil, the economy dial should be turned to off.

    Also drops when incoming domestic cold water temp drops.
    You’re probably fine turning it down in the summer and you may only have to turn it back up when it gets very cold out. You can try a higher economy number, but I wouldn’t waste my time or money with the outdoor reset.
    The control is going to target much lower high limit settings most of the winter when you reset. You will short cycle, and domestic water may not keep up.
    If it were a Tekmar control, when you had a call for DHW it would automatically readjust the target boiler temperature to a higher temperature.
