We have had isdues in the riser pipe up on the 5th floor whete you hear real bad banging in the winter . Been asking the landlord for years to fix it . We were told the problem is most likely the basement nothing wS found up on our floor to cause this .so today plumber were here in the basement the open a wall on our section A . When we came home they threw this in the yard its pipingnthey cut out does anyone know what this is ? Is this where condensation is suppose to drip out

it is 3 pieces of pipe connected with a tee with a flange connection on it, possibly covered in asbestos. i'm not sure what the thing tee'd off of it other than it looks like it is plugged where it once connected to something.

That is some kind of plug-type Gas Cock on the end. Can you get a close up of the insulation? In Any case, assume it IS A.C.M (asbestos containing material) and treat accordingly. Mad Dog

I am not seeing any asbestos.

That tee is a welded tee.

And a gas cock.

Are they working on a gas line? Looks like gas to me possibly.

From here it looks like painted fiberglass insulation but can't know for sure. Mad Dog

Not seeing insulation maybe I am blind. Looks like welded tee, flange and thread-O-let. Painted pipe.

it could be painted, ut could be wrapped or mudded in something for some reason. i can't tell from the blurry picture. sometimes people got carried away with the furnace cement and covered everything that was connected to the boiler.

Looks like paint to me. I can see welded joints on the tee.
