Why is the boiler room so cold? Unintended consequences of updating boilers

When you upgrade the boilers to more efficient ones, the boiler broom tends to be cooler. In this case, it was 34 degrees F. I share what options you have and what we chose.

    One problem with this approach is that very cold air coming into an oil burner can cool the oil to where it doesn't atomize well. This can upset the air-fuel mix to where it causes sooting.

    I think this is covered in @Firedragon 's books, but I don't have mine with me at the moment.

    Steamhead… it looks like to only solution is to move to South Carolina. 😜. The boiler rooms don't get that cold here. But there are very few heating system boilers here. Most of the boiler rooms down this way are for Domestic Water Heating. Can't make any money if there are too few boiler customers in the area! LOL

    I changed out a fair sized Kewanee steamer for 3 smaller Peerless CI.

    The existing comb air inlet was always too small and I had to deal with it for the change out. To avoid the cutting of an 8" brick wall and having a "cold" room, I used the pipe tunnel volume which was freely connected to the boiler room.

    The tunnel is a 4' x 4' x 350' long which increased the "size" of the small boiler room.

    To convince the boiler inspector of adequate air I had a drawing from the original blueprints and had to show my work on the math end, it is still posted on the wall next to the boiler room pinup girl picture.
