Assembling Weil McLain Block

Hi,

I am a homeowner. I have a plumber installing a WM EG 45 gas steam boiler. He has to break the block into sections to get into basement, then reassemble it in basement.

2 questions: the contractor says there is no reason to replace the seal rope, as long as it's not damaged when block is disassembled. Any thoughts on this?

Second, can the block be assembled and fired up the same day....is there any cure period for sealer used during block reassembly, such that it would be unwise to do a hydrostatic test, or fire it up the same day it is assembled?

Thanks!

I agree, not much to worry about. Rope normally stays in place, gaskets might too. If not very easy to put them back in place. There is really nothing to "dry" that would require you to wait to fire boiler the same day as the reassemble.

Seems to me you are getting some good advice…hang in there.

Its fine, you can water test the block, and should right after assembly. No cure time needed. I do this regularly.

Ther is probably some adhesive (I use spray contact cement) that holds the rope in place. This only holds the rope in place during assembly. Once the block is assembled and the rope is compressed in place the adhesive does nothing.

As long as Mr. Plumber know what he is doing no issues.
