New Appreciation for SMART Indirects

We replaced this indirect yesterday for a rooming house at a Zen retreat. It’s a 60 gallon tank serving 21 fixtures and I originally wanted to install another brand, but the load of 21 fixtures made me think twice and I had to look at the spec’s.

The SMART is double the recovery rate of the others I was looking at. The boiler is a TT 399K BTU unit. They have never run out of hot water. I’m very impressed with that performance. It helps that the indirect heats to 150F and the tempering valve mixes it down.

8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab

So it is really more a shell and tube hx than an indirect in this application.
