This weeks video goes over the dangers caused by steam piping. It discusses the things I look for in a steam boiler room which could signal a dangerous place. I talk about the difference between normal water hammer and condensate induced water hammer.

Another great video Ray with information all service guys and even installers should pay attention to. I think you should do a video on "listening and watching " when you enter a boiler room. Any time I would enter a boiler room I would find a place to sit for a few minutes and listen and watch the operating equipment. It is always surprising on what problems your ears can hear and your eyes can see while just observing.

I love this type of science… info.   Great video.   When you mentioned that water hammer can be compared to a firearm or small explosive, I was reminded about an interesting statistic.   A dynamite explosion is equal to the expansion of that stick of TNT increasing is size more than 900 times its original size.   Now that's pretty explosive.

But when water expands into steam, that water turns into more than 1700 times larger volume of steam.   If that happens instantly for a large enough volume of water, then you can get a much larger explosion than a stick of Dynamite.  Almost double. The same thing happens in reverse when steam is cooled too fast and shrinks 1700 times smaller,  that can push a pretty large volume of water down a pipe at a really accelerated rate. That’s the slug of steam hitting that pocket of condensate in the sagging pipe.  That can be a little noisy, don’t ya’ think?

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?
