Boiler help?
Which way does the water flow? Could the pump be backwards?

It is flowing down but I don't know if that's correct, I am getting no circulation though the pump is running and working I checked. I tried flipping it over and sent it up and got good heat. So I shut it off till I know and understand it. I know the previous owner was diy-ing and I wonder if it was installed wrong. I want it right thouh

Close up picture showing the back side and the flanges please.

It can be modified so the control is flipped over depending on the side you put it on.

There is no flow checks or bleeders anywhere except the top of the expansion tank. It is a tiny little house 20x30. Thats a interesting point though bout the air pocket, I've been considering that.I did blast city water through the system until I got good stream out of the ball valves

I have a friend with a propress stopping to put bleeders on next weekend, it's just still cold here wanted to take the chill out of the air.

it is fairly common to have circulators on the return if packaged cast boilers
If the exp tank connects to the top of the boiler you should be pumping away and work fine
I assume it worked previously? What changed?
How is the fill pressure?

Well I came into this cottage during the winter when the previous owner had allowed all the pipes to freeze repeatedly, he fixed everything with shark bites and no bleeders, the pump appears new and I believe he replaced it, I am very skeptical about his knowledge, he gave up on the place. I'm a framing /finish carpenter and just trying to fix it, I will get someone if I have too, but this place is well off the beaten tracks.

Fill pressure was a little high 24 psi. But I thought maybe I had a little too much water in it, I didn't let it get hot only on long enough to feel all pipes getting warm. I'll take better pics tomorrow.

do you have valves in the right place to be able to purge it? you need a valve in a place that can block off flow through the boiler so it can go from the pressure reducing valve or manual fill valve or a hose connected to a drain connected to a water supply, through the system piping, and out another drain, usually from the supply to the return but the direction isn't critical if there aren't any flow control devices.
if you don't have a valve to block flow through the boiler you will just flush the water through the boiler.

Your probably air bound but if the previous owner didn't put any valves or bleeders in your going to have a tough time.
If the water is not moving I would recommend you shut the pump off before it gets ruined from running dry.

If you are going to go to all of this trouble, consider moving the circ. to the supply rather than leaving it on the return. Pumping away.
