Doing my first Firebox rebuild this weekend on a Peerless ECT 3 steam boiler. Got a Lynn kit. Replacing the target wall, blanket, door insulation and door seal. The instructions seem pretty straightforward. But I am surprised at when installing the target wall there is no adhesive, to keep it in place I'm assuming it's more of a press fit. What keeps it from falling in like they seem to do often enough as they age. Any recommendations other than following the instructions are appreciated. Thanks in advance

You're right, the kit does have shims and reading your post it makes me think the shims should be used on the sides to keep the target wall snug

@Robert_H , most of those Lynn target walls are sealed in plastic so they remain damp. This allows one to install them and press the "rim" of the target wall into grooves at the rear of the firebox. The target will harden when fired and remain in place.

Not all target walls are wet packs. I don't believe the ECT is. But yes, if it's a wet pack, it must be cured.

I doubt if this stuff works in less than ideal condition but Lynn does sell this waterglass adhesive which I guess holds thing in place until it can be fired a couple of times to bake everything into position.

At times I have used a ( spray ) adhesive when its a dry type. Really helps when your in a tight spot and want to keep the mess to a minimum.
