What kind of steam trap cage is this ?

in Strictly Steam

Trying to see the condition of my steam trap. I have the warren webster 712 HB trap, when I opened it up, it seems like someone rebuilt it at one point with something other than B&J or tunstall cage. I am not even sure how to get it off from the cap. Appreciate any tip on this.

    Oh wow. Looks pretty good for almost 100 years. Wasn't sure how forceful I need to remove the element.

    I replaced 30 from the same era, you can keep the housings and get new innards with a taller cap.

    Bryant 245-8, 430k btu, 2-pipe steam in a 1930s 6-unit 1-story apt building in the NM mountains. 26 radiators 3800sqf

    @guzzinerd B&J site is saying use 1764 cage unit with existing cover. Where would i go about finding a new cap that will work it ?

    I finally got it off ! It is basically 2 layers of metal bellows. It came off with some brute force with the help with dremel. I guess  warren webster never had the intention of having it replaced, since there is no screw or anything. Will try to post some picture on the next one.

    Or it has corroded itself in place over the past 100 years.

    You are right ! 50% chance of it actually unscrew nicely.

    Tunstall replacement # is TFWW2515, using same cap (verify with Tunstall on the # & procedure, great people) also I think we had to pull seat . Did about 100 of them little over a year ago. Just tear out the old element if wont unscrew from cap. Dont need the treads in cap for the tunstall

    I picked up some old/new barnes and jones 1764 from ebay for cheap. but seems like TFWW2515 is a little cheaper new from Supply house, will probally go with Tunstall for the rest.
