Steam Trap

Been doing this work 35 years and have not seen this type of steam trap. Can any of you tell me what it is called and should it be mounted in the position shown? The radiator hammers and I am suspecting this trap is mounted in the wrong position.

It almost looks like a Broomell Elbow?
I would say that should be mounted vertically with Plug on bottom. Mad Dog

Almost certainly some sort of vapor system and not really a trap, probably a check ball sort of device. what kind of valve is on the radiators?

I have three in my house, I think they are called “return elbo trap”?
Two of mine are mounted vertically with the output down. Third is mounted at 45 down.

mine work well and I haven’t cleaned them in 34 years

Cant hurt to raise up in wood blocks, as suggested, install it vertically & see how it goes. Mad Dog

Just a question, will the eccentric fitting cause problems, the book shows it on the center line.

It's an O-E return elbow, as illustrated in the upper left of the "Vapor Devices" scan. Also appears in chapter 15 of @DanHolohan's "The Lost Art of Steam Heating". And yes, it should be vertical.

yes, the park. I borrowed 2 of Dan’s books from our library and have a 3rd coming from another library … feel like I need to buy 1-2 for all that I have learned.
