Smart 40 indirect coupler leaking T&P relief

Hello.

Got a slow leak in the 3/4 coupler that connects the auxillery pipe to the T&P relief valve, not sure what caused it, possible crack during manufacturing?

Wondering how easy it is to replace. Can I shut off the cold water inlet, then shut off the feed and return from the boiler and drain from the relief valve until the water is below the stem?

I've never drained this kind of indirect system that goes through the boiler.

Thank you

    Two things to address.

    1. That is a black iron fitting on the open system part of the tank. That coupling should be stainless steel or brass.
    2. That should work just like a regular water heater tank. Turn off the cold and let the pressure off by draining the tank. once there is no pressure on the tank. you can remove the T&P valve to replace the coupling and tighten the fitting.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Thank you. Can i drain enough only using the relief valve? This tank doesn't have a drain on the bottom of the tank. It does have one on the cold inlet.

Yes, you can. After shutting off the water to the water heater, trip the relief valve until no water comes out then do what @EdTheHeaterMan says above. And while you're at it, replace the relief valve too.
