Burnham steamer

Good day to everyone,l I’m not very active these days , just got old , lol!

So an old customer has a pin 4 Burnham steam boiler , asked me to take a look for him .

Looked ok , piping , well it’s worked 17 years !

First thing I gave it a general look over , looked ok . Then I decided to flood it , so as not to waste anymore time

The flood check was good , dropped it to water line and fired it up , so far all was good .

Then after starting to make steam , I heard a gurgling noise, then I noticed the top of the boiler was extremely hot . I had already by this time checked the draft and it was pulling good , as well had plenty of fresh make up air .

Looking around even more I saw the pressure gage , plastic cover was melted .

I’ll see if I can attach pictures, but I kinda recall someone had made up a wand type device to insert and do a real good flushing .

I would like to try that , as well add a skimming port, and skim it by the book !

I would definitely appreciate any suggestions any of you installers would have . Thank all of you in advance

    Looks like it isn't drafting right and is experiencing some amount of rollout.

    I think there is a @gerrygill video floating around you tube that shows skimming and wanding.

    Thank u both , yes at one time it was rolling out due to draft and crap between the sections , you are exactly correct!

    I kinda do remember a wand type tool made up , so yes thank u

    Take the top panel off and see if the flue collector is sealed tight to the block. Escaping flue gases can do this.
