Measuring makeup water in a hydronic system

Now that I've already had a leaking oil tank, time to move on to my next fear: leaks in the hydronic system.

I think the best way to get early warning of the leaks is likely to be measuring makeup water. How would I do this. I have a valve with a water pressure setting that I assume makes up the water, but I don't have a device that will tell me how much.

You could shut off the fresh water feed valve.

Note the pressure at that time and monitor if it drops and does not recover.

It will fluctuate with the firing of the boiler, but if it goes flat then water/air is going somewhere.

You should have a LWCO if you want to leave the water feed off for any length of time.

If you want to know how much then you can install a water meter, maybe $100+ for one.

I use this type for both troubleshooting and calculating fill volume to add conditioners

it catches those very small flows best

It seems like they charge a lot to install the microswitch on the dial.
