What Does An Aquastat Do?

It's no mystery that an aquastat is a control that goes with a boiler. If you don't know much more about it than that, though, you have a lot of company. There seems to be confusion about exactly what an aquastat does, and especially about finding a replacement aquastat when one fails.

    I loved the article. I would say that "stat" does not mean switch, but "not changing." As in the words "static" or "stationary." A thermostat would thus attempt to keep the temperature constant, possibly by operating one or more switches controlling heating and cooling equipment.

    Logical. Functionally, it operates a switch (or variable control), but only through a thermo-static control reaction to a thermo-meter. We can vary the desired reaction.
