burn chamber target wall on a Burnham V1 (V13A) question.

I was going to do this myself, but then realized it was covered under my $100 service contract with oil company, so I had them do it. There was some confusion as to the proper part number (I'm 99% sure its a lynn 1064 kit). I wasn't able to watch the tech put it in, but now looking through the peep door, I'm not convinced it is the right size. It looks like the target wall covers the flame, but i see a gap of about 1-2 inch between the top of liner and the little nubby nipples on the cast iron heat exchanger (or whatever those are called). I don't recall seeing that gap before, though the wall was pretty saggy

Hard to take a picture without pulling the burner out, but is the target wall supposed to go all the way up in the back? The tech seemed competent, but wouldnt be shocked if he used whatever he had on the truck rather than the correct kit.

    Assuming this is a wet based boiler providing the flame is contained within the combustion chamber you should be fine. A wet based boiler only needs a combustion chamber to aid combustion, it's not needed to protect the boiler as all the boiler surfaces are water backed. You just don't want the flame to impinge on any metal surface

    Agreed. I still have a V-14 and just replaced the chamber. The main reason for the chamber is to maintain a proper flame temperature. This helps keep smoke and soot from forming. As long as the flame doesn't touch the cast-iron, you're good.

    I never heard of that being covered in a contract. You should stick with that company.

    I have installed that chamber and I remember the back was is a wet blanket type of chamber. This wet blanket has a corbel at the top that protrudes about 1" at the top. That corbel is about 2" to 4" below the cast iron pins that start just above the fire chamber on the back wall. From your description, it sounds correct.

    The wet blanket will harden into place once the burner is fired.

    It's petro, and I think I got a pretty good new customer discount. We'll see what the rate is next year. they do have some language about not covering pre-existing conditions (so maybe a bill could still be on the way), but the list of covered components is pretty extensive. The first zoomer tech was worthless (in and out in 15 minutes); but after complaining, the 2nd (cleaning, tuneup) and 3rd tech (combustion chamber) were good.
